Dear Pageant Girl,

I thought I’d break up the brunette domination and give them a run for their money with the next few blonde stunners.

Now, I don’t know much about this girl and no wonder – this is her first foray into the world of beauty pageants!

Erin first captured my attention when I saw the gorgeous photo of her event flyer which was posted on the DPG site.  The moment I laid eyes on it I was sold.

Actually, she reminds me a lot of former Miss Earth Australia and one of my favorite beauty queens, Kelly-Louise Maguire.

Introducing the first of our blonde stunners, Erin Holland.

What is your motivation in joining Miss World Australia?

To be considered for a National Title of any description and therefore an ambassador for your country is an absolute honour and I am completely overwhelmed by this situation I have found myself in! It is fantastic to see a pageant that embraces contestants’ numerous talents (referring to the Fitness, Talent, Top Model and Beauty with a Purpose sections) and as an Opera and Musical Theatre trained singer I am of course exceptionally excited about the Talent component!

What do you know about Miss World Australia and its Beauty with a Purpose motto?

What impressed me the most upon researching Miss World was its long standing tradition of being so much more than simply a competition of physical beauty. As times become increasingly tougher, giving what we can back to those less fortunate is absolutely imperative to our society. I believe Beauty With a Purpose has been an incredible initiative in campaigning and most importantly succeeding in making a difference in many peoples’ lives for many years.

Are pageants still relevant in this day and age?

Absolutely. Any event that promotes and encourages the importance of individuality, self-confidence, generosity, philanthropy, compassion and of course inner-beauty in young women is a remarkable thing. I would endeavor to use the esteemed profile received to continue to instil within the community how important these values are within today’s society by all means possible.

Apart from the crown, what do you hope to gain from this experience?

The opportunity to travel to one of the most sacred areas of our country is so exciting! It will be an incredible experience to visit the very heart of our country and learn about the amazing Dreamtime stories from the traditional owners of the area. Meeting the other girls will be fabulous – you always seem to make friends for life during such life-changing experiences.

Who are your role models?

Career wise, Kristen Chenoweth has always been an amazing role model of mine. A multi-faceted performer, she was classically trained in opera, delved into a career in musical theatre (probably best known for originating the character “Glinda” from “Wicked” in the Original Broadway Cast of Wicked) before parlaying into TV and Film. She is also incredibly philanthropically inclined, supporting numerous charities including: Alzheimer’s Associations, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Clothes Off our Back and Worldwide Orphans Foundation, using her profile to encourage her fans to do the same. I hope to emulate a similar career path to this amazing woman, as I am similarly classically trained in Opera and have always dreamed of a career in musical theatre. I hope one day I may even have half the profile of this incredible woman and use it to promote the importance of charities such as the the Red Cross and the Cancer Council, both of which I am an avid supporter and donator.

Tell me something interesting about yourself

I speak 6 languages (Italian, German, Spanish, French, Norwegian and of course English) phonetically! During my degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music clearly didn’t have time to learn so many languages fluently, but I can read you a menu in any of those given languages! I am also an avid QLD Rugby League Supporter. This causes my NSW friends much grief during State of Origin time….

What kind of preparations have you undergone for the competition?

I have worked incredibly hard ensuring my charity efforts that contribute towards “Beauty with a Purpose” will reap as much benefit as possible for the Lilla Community. I’ve increased my dance training/exercise regime in order to prepare for the Fitness/Top Model fast track and of course keeping up my singing training for the talent component; something I do daily for at least an hour already.

If your parents were against you marrying your boyfriend what would you do?

We are ultimately our own person and I believe you should be able to choose who you want to spend the rest of your life with. That being said, I know my wonderful friends and family always have my best interests at heart and if they were seriously concerned about the person I had chosen, I would be forced to look at the situation diplomatically and reasses their reasoning for their negativity.

Hypothetically, if you had a 14 year old daughter who had a crooked nose that affected her self esteem would you let her have plastic surgery?

I would try to engage her openly about why she felt the pressure to change her appearance; reassuring her that beauty really is beyond skin deep and is a quality that radiates from within a woman. I would also highlight the issue that surgery and general anesthesia is never an easy thing and that we should avoid all unnecessary trauma to our bodies. That being said, if in a few years time (when at an age of consent) she was still suffering low self-esteem as a direct response to this issue, I would support her in her decision. A very dear friend of mine did exactly this and I could never deny anyone the exponential growth in her confidence and overall happiness since her procedure.

How would you promote the Beauty with a Purpose message to Australian media?

I would use the amazing profile I received to really advocate the importance of charity in our society today. I would reinforce the notion that anything we can do for another, whether it be as simple as donating blood, sparing your small change for a charity or being conscious of own own carbon footprint, we WILL collectively make a huge impact on this beautiful world we live in.

If you could take one person into space with you who would it be?

My brother Alex. I couldn’t even begin to count the hours we’ve spent discussing (arguing, let’s be honest) the enormity and endless possibilities of space! Just get us started on whether aliens exist….
Quite seriously, I couldn’t think of anything more breathtaking or mind-blowing than getting to experience outer-space. There are quite literally no words.

What is the greatest gift anyone gave you?

Life itself!! Thanks Mum and Dad, couldn’t have done it without you 😉

What are your views on privacy rights for those in the public eye?  Should they be different from the rest of the population?

Everybody deserves the basic human right of privacy in their personal lives. Nobody should ever feel threatened or personally attacked for no given reason; something that some areas of the popular media has been guilty of in the past. Those of us in the public eye have a civil duty to influence society in a positive way.

What makes up the quintessential woman?

She is a compassionate, resilient, empathetic, modest and confident woman within herself and her ability. She understands the value of balancing work and personal life. She understands that “beauty” is in the eye of the beholder. We are all different and that is what makes us beautiful.

Do you think we should censor the Internet?

There is information that is absolutely way too accessible for minors out there.  I fully support child-lock on inappropriate sites and social media. This prevents children being able to divulge personal information when they do not fully understand the ramifications of what they are doing. That being said, internet is an incredible resource for research and social networking  and has allowed the realms of communication to expand exponentially.

Tell me why you should be Miss World Australia 2012.

It would be the ultimate privilege to represent our great country on an international platform. I believe I would be a worthy ambassador for all things Miss World stands for and inspire women to believe that with hard-work, dedication and confidence, any dream can become a reality.
