Dear Pageant Girl,
Last night I received a call from Robert, DPG VIC. As I picked up the phone all I heard muttered on the other end was “your girl won.”
The last time I heard those words was 8 years ago when a young blonde from the coast won the coveted title of Miss Universe in 2004.
Myffy Scadden-McHugh, another of our DPG alumnis, handed her glittering tiara to a new queen last night.
Monika Radulovic, 22, from Sydney was crowned Miss Tourism Australia 2012 in Melbourne. She competed against 15 other young women for the chance to represent Australia at the Miss Tourism International pageant in Malaysia on December 31, 2012.
Now, Miss Tourism Australia may not be prestigious as Miss Universe, but in Australia it is run by the same organisers as Miss Universe Australia. For those in the know, we affectionately call this pageant “Miss Universe Australia’s baby sister”, as many MUA competitors cross over and compete for this title and vice versa.
When Dear Pageant Girl was invited to nominate a girl to compete, I knew exactly who to send.
I have known Monika for over three years. The moment I laid eyes on her I knew she had what it took to succeed in pageants. Back then, she could not entertain the idea as she wanted to focus on finishing her Psychology degree. Much respect to that. In the meantime we used her for photo shoots, making sure she was comfortable in front of the camera and had her get used to her ‘angles’ and lines.
Now, at 22 and knowing that she had just finished her degree I knew this was my chance to test the waters and see if my hunch was correct.
After a marathon session on interview, styling (Monika wore Rachel Gilbert on the night) and runway, we packed Monika off a couple of days later to compete and the rest is history.
On behalf of Dear Pageant Girl I would like to thank Monika for bringing honor to the DPG sash. May your year be as beautiful as you are. But for now, feast your eyes on our new queen!
